The Diversity of Web Design

Web design is both an art and science, and as such there is always going to be  subjectivity as to what people like and dislike in a website’s design.

When I talk about website design, I am referring to the look and feel of a website. Is it clean or cluttered? Is it easy to follow or cumbersome on the eye? Does the navigation and flow make sense or is a site visitor lost and not sure how to find what they are looking for?

These are for me the core questions of good vs bad site design.

The art of design can lend itself to so many variables and preferences. It’s not always as simple as 123.

When we talk with a company, they may want something more traditional, simple, and / or very clean. Vanilla is the flavor the day. That’s their preference.

Others may want something very bold, rich, and unique in the look of the website, requiring more patience and time in nailing down the look / feel they are going after.

Even when the company arrives at what they like and want, then there is preference of what the site visitor may want to see and how they want to get their content.

Preferences are not only informed by the company and its visitors, but also what type of website it is. Different needs require different layouts. For example, a marketing website ought to look different than an informational website. An informational website ought to look different than an e-commerce site, and so forth.

If the company is a creative company doing marketing, then the site ought to be more unique and artistic. If the company is professional, then clean and polished is the likely direction of the website design.

You cannot and should not think of web design as being locked in a box with a few templates to choose from. Creating a design that meets the needs of the customer which is friendly and inviting is the key to winning over your audience.

There is no one do-it all-design, and you wouldn’t want there to be. Creating something uniquely you is what makes for a great web design and helps you stand out in a crowd.

The diversity of web design means there are lots of options to fit a design with your preferences, tastes, and needs; while meeting the needs of your site visitors and providing them with a great online experience with your company or organization.
