“According to Research led by Dr. Gitte Lindgaard at Carleton University in Ontario Web your website has just 1/20th of a second to capture the interest of potential customers. In the blink of an eye, before they have had time to read one word your content, discover your USP or be motivated by your call to action, your site visitors are making near instantaneous judgments about your company based on your web site’s visual appeal.” Peter Hoggan, Escocian SEO

Peter has it exactly correct. Over the years, I have seen some web sites rank #1 in Google for their search results, only to click the link and go “Oh My Goodness, that needs help.” Immediately, I click the back button and start all over.

As important as it is to show up early and often in a search engine, those efforts can be highly neglected based on the look, feel, and menu navigation of a site.

One company I recently met with couldn’t understand why they were receiving tens of thousands of hits from Google, but not one bit of business. When I asked them to think as a prospective client, would you do business with a company who’s site was plain, white, boring, and overloaded with so much stuff one couldn’t make sense of it?

“Of course not. I see your point now,” she said.

If you have 1/20th of a second, you have to make the most of your site if you want to convert your site visitors into leads, and your leads in buyers, and buyers into customers.

Your website may very well be the first introduction to your company. Can you afford for it to not represent your company?
